Do Not Monetize Your Blog Too Soon.
When should you start to monetize your blog? There are arguments for monetizing your blog right from the word go but in my opinion this is a mistake. There is a chance that you will not only alienate your early readers but there are distinct advantages to leaving your blog relatively ad free at the start of its life.
Blog Directories and General Directories have a huge bias against accepting websites that display a large number of advertising and revenue making text. By resisting the desire to place advertising everywhere, you are vastly increasing your chances of these important directories accepting your site for inclusion in their publication.
In my opinion, the addition of too much initial advertising, affiliate linking and general monetization will adversely affect the chances of your blog being accepted by blog directories and general directories.
In completing online blog directory submissions you are looking to receive those all important inward pointing links from the respected, trusted and high PR directory sites. The more separate directory inclusions that you obtain for your site, the higher the ranking and the higher the trust given to your site by the search engines.
Most of the better directories all have a human editor manually reviewing the submitted site before inclusion. This is why the search engines rank those directories so highly because these directories are doing the hard work for them by weeding out unworthy and spammy sites.
This is the rough (very rough) promotion plan that I am following with the continued development of my blog. I only have the one form of monetization at the moment, an adsense unit at the top of each page.
- Initially concentrate on adding content first.
- Try to post frequently and regularly.
- Create a sitemap.
- Sumit blog url and sitemap to major search engines.
- Keep adding content.
- Initially add only a single discreet income source e.g. one adsense unit.
- Join several forums and post relevant and intelligent comments.
- Submit blog to several blog directories.
- Keep adding content.
- Add relevant and intelligent comments to quality blogs in your niche.
- Refer and link to these niche blogs in your own posts.
- Keep adding content.
- Submit blog to more blog directories.
- Submit blog to more general directories.
- Keep adding lots of content.
- Post articles on article directories.
- Add second discreet income source.
- Etc
Some of these tasks are ‘complete once and finish’ but others are repeatable. For example the submission of your blog to directories and writing articles can be re-visited, repeated and phased over a period of time.
I have reached the ’submit blog to more blog directories’ stage and will soon be starting to ‘post articles on article directories’ stage. I’ll write in later post about my experiences of article submissions.
