If like me you are looking to make money online, there are many sources of income, both passive and active that can help to make your fortune. One of those methods is domain speculation, which involves buying sought after or potentially valuable domain names which can then be sold on for a profit at a later date.
So what domains should you buy? The top level domain (TLD) of .com is the one to choose. These will always be the most expensive and other TLD of .net, .org will never be as valuable. Domains that contain keywords e.g. investing.com will always command a premium but to buy one of these at starter prices is almost impossible. (I am assuming you are looking to keep costs low). Most of the best single word and two word english keywords have all been registered although obviously these are for sale at a profit by their owners.
Besides domains containing keywords, the usual rule is that the shorter the domain length is the more potentially valued it will be.
1 letter domains e.g. a.com went a long time ago and no doubt are astronomical in value.
2 letter domains e.g. ab.com and 3 letter domains e.g. abc.com have all been registered long ago.
However surprisingly 4 letter domains are still available to purchase in 2007 and can still be bought for as low as approx $8 if you know where to look. However you will have to be quick because experts in this field believe that ALL of the 4 letter domain names will be fully registered by the end of 2007. The theory is that as the number of available to register 4 letter domains steadily decreases, there will be a ‘critical point’ at which major domain name registrars and speculators will go into overdrive and buy up the remaining domains. At this point the value of any 4 letter domain will rise overnight.
In order to research and buy your available 4 letter domains, there are several resources that I recommend. No doubt there are many more but these are a good starting point.
The website dyyo.com specialise in researching, advising and listing SOLELY 4 letter domains available for registration. They have many interesting articles including analysis on remaining 4 letter domains and which letters to possibly avoid.
There is also a comprehensive 4 letter domain search tool to find your valuable 4 letter domain name. The subject of picking up ‘dropped’ 4 letter domain names is also discussed.
The second source is justdropped.com who have very detailed and comprehensive domains search tool which enables you to search for 4 letter domains that have been dropped (i.e. not been re-registered by the original owner) and are now available to purchase on the open market.
I have covered this website’s search tool in more details in my previous post expired domains with backlinks. It is possible to look for domains ‘about to be dropped’ with this powerful tool but that is a different complicated subject which I will not cover at present.
At the time of writing this post, most of the available 4 letter domains are not very user friendly e.g. frvk.com or gjbu.com but you never know if these are acronyms for a company or organisation. Google can be used to check on these 4 letter names. However good dropped names do sometimes become available which could be the one to make you the big money.
After doing a bit of research I am now the proud owner of the 4 letter domain jbix.com which cost me the grand total of $10. I chose this 4 letter because it has some brandability, it can be pronounced in conversation, it contains a vowel and can be said and spelt in a not too difficult way. Time will tell if I manage to make a profit on this domain name.
I have researched and purchased a number of domain names and I will cover the subject of creating a valuable domain portfolio in a later post. I believe that like real estate in the bricks and mortar world, domains will always increase in value in the equivalent online world.
