Internet Explorer vs FireFox Issues
I am still trying to discover the best medium in which to write and edit the posts of this blog. I have used Notepad, Texpad and MS Word but after a few problems, I have plumped for the plain old in-built editor that comes within WordPress. I’ll explain the incident that resulted in me choosing this editor.
I must admit to using both of the popular browsers, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox, to write, edit and view my posts for this blog. I have various plug-ins and tools in each browser, some of which are not transferable and as a result, my currently open browser will depend on my PC activities at that time.
However I once used Microsoft Word to write a post, opened Firefox and used WordPress’s upload facility to import the newly crafted post into the blog. After previewing the new post in Firefox, everything looked OK and I hit the publish button and thought that was that.
However the next day I went to check my blog for comments, opened up the home page, this time not in Firefox but using Internet Explorer and was horrified to see that my blog page was a mess! The sidebar was wrapped around the bottom of the page, a huge piece of text was incorrectly all hyperlinked and everything else on the page was misaligned.
I’m still not sure what happened exactly but there was probably badly formed HTML that Firefox could handle but Explorer could not. I quickly edited and corrected the post using the WordPress built-in editor, re-published and viewed the post in BOTH Firefox and Explorer, checking carefully that everything was now OK. As a result I have since been reluctant to using MS Word as an editor.
Consequently always view your new post immediately after publication in as many browsers as you can and especially the big two of Internet Explorer and Firefox. Just to be on the safe side, I always do this check now.

Your reluctance to use Word is wise. Word likes inserting special characters (especially for quotation marks) that do not translate well for all browsers. The WordPress editor is good about making sure your html is well formed (and tags closed).

Testing things in both IE and FF is always a good idea.
You can use a service like BrowserShots.org when you’re redesigning your site for example - it tests in multiple browsers at once. You wouldn’t use it every time you post though.
I write directly in the WordPress editor, but turn off Wysiwyg. If you learn a bit of HTML - how to bold something, etc. - turning off the editor is the best because you have total control over formatting.

[…] Yesterday was quite a busy day and I didn’t get much time to do blogging. Still I went through all the 47 blog mistakes of the Blog Mistakes Project and wanted to check what all other mistakes I’m committing while blogging. One among that was the mistake by Mark Paddock (Internet Explorer vs. Firefox Issues). He had mentioned that to check the blog in as many browsers as possible to see alignment and formatting issues. So I wanted to make sure that my blog didn’t have any alignment issues in any browsers (the popular ones). I’m currently using Firefox and it was displaying my blog perfectly. I had also checked it in Internet Explorer and it was also displaying correctly. I wanted to make sure that my blog was perfect in Opera, so I downloaded the latest version and checked. There was some alignment issues when I opened it in Opera, which I quickly corrected. […]

What an eyeopener. I was unaware of these issues, but checked both browsers. Sure enough, one page showed fine in a browser, while the other was “a mess”, and I must assume has been for some time. Have fixed it now, and both are clear (although I want to improve ‘content’, but that is another matter). Thanks again for letting us all learn from a mistake which may affect more of us than we realize.

I learned about not using Word for web work years ago when I first got into building personal websites and such… it’s good for what it’s supposed to be: a word processor. It’s pretty much terrible at almost anything else it tries to be. For my stuff, I use a combination of Adobe Contribute and Adobe Dreamweaver. I use Contribute for simple posts that don’t require much in the way of formatting or heavy code, and I use Dreamweaver when I need to format something a little fancier. If you can’t afford, or simply don’t want to spend the money on, those programs, you can always use a free HTML editor. It’s generally easier to use an HTML editor than try to use WP’s built-in editor, IMO.

Something that might help… there’s a Firefox extension called “IETab” that installs a single icon into your toolbar. The magic is when you click on it, it switches you back and forth between the Firefox and IE formats. I’ve gotten in the habit of hitting it regularly after each post or design adjustment, and I’ve caught several problems that way. Not having to load two browsers makes it almost fun to check for compatibility : )
